Hospitality & the New Diplomas
Hospitality is a new qualification that you can do at school or college. From September 2009 there are up to 10 subjects to choose from.
By 2011, there will be 17 subjects in total.
Not all schools run the Diplomas.
Currently Peacehaven Community School offers Hospitality and will have a newly built Hospitality suite built by Sept 2010.
It's different to GCSEs and A levels because:
- You will get practical experience
- You will learn in the classroom
- You will find out about an area of work you are interested in
You keep all your options open with the Diploma. So when you finish you can go to college and do another course - like the next level up Diploma, A levels or an NVQ. Or, go on to university, do an Apprenticeship or go into a job with trainingOn the Diploma in Hospitality course you will look at 3 main areas:
- The Hospitality Industry: Introducing the UK hospitality industry and customer service
- People in the Hospitality Industry: Developing skills to work in the hospitality industry
- Hospitality Operations: Preparing and serving food and beverages
At P.C.S. we have strong links with Food Technology and the Catering Industry. The Hospitality course will have a strong bias towards the practical aspects of the curriculum.
These are some of the things you might do on your course:
- Visit and enjoy hospitality at a variety of different local hospitality services
- Find out what's involved in running a restaurant, café or hotel
- Get to know the sector and the way it works by visiting and sampling services
- Learn about customer service and what it means
- Learn about food and drink service
- You'll learn about pricing and budgeting to take care of the books
How will you be assessed?
- Through a coursework portfolio
- Through a written examination
- Through practical skills
