Maths in Action Week at PCS is a special and unique week where all students are involved in activities, trips and lessons that involved engaging and exciting MATHEMATICS!
30 of our students from Year 7 and 8 went to Bletchley Park home of the WWII Codebreakers and Alan Turing.
“I thought it was an amazing place to visit.I really enjoyed the code breaking activity.I also enjoyed taking photos of the amazing things they used in that wonderful place. When we got to touch the Enigma machine that was special. Also I enjoyed the tour”Ava Dawson ( Yr 7)
40 of our keen mathematicians from Year 10 took part in the Advanced Maths Dragon Quiz. A team game which involved problem solving and a free lunch! Our visitors from Advanced Maths Support Programme said “What lovely students they participate so well”.
20 of our students from Year 9 and Year 10 went to Sussex University to take part in the women in Mathematics Day an event run by PCS and attended by 160 girls from around the county. The day was set up to encourage girls to consider Core Maths and A-Level Mathematics.
“The first thing we did was listen to a lecture on why we should take maths and what subjects it would be helpful in.This was very interesting as we didn’t realise how many jobs require it”
Anya, Sophia and Mia (Yr9)
“ It was great and my favourite part was when you could win £20 as part of a probability lecture, no one won it though!”
Teagan and Megan (Yr9)
A very successful Maths in Action Week not only this we had lessons on Risk, Finance and Code breaking for all years in school!
WE LOVE MATHS!
Peacehaven Community School held their first Summer series of Primary Maths Masterclasses in association with The Royal institution.
Our most able Year 6 students from local primary schools were invited to take part in three sessions delivered by our Numeracy lead Ms Gallagher and Dr Jenny Sharpe from Portsmouth University.
The students worked with graphic calculators something they usually wouldn’t see until A-Level.
All participants received a certificate of participation from Alison Eaves the Primary lead from The Royal Institution.
Feedback was excellent and we look forward to our Winter Series starting in November.
14 of our Year 10 girls visited Sussex University this term for Girls in STEM. The day was to encourage girls to consider STEM subjects as future careers.
The girls took part in interactive lectures on Maths in Medicine and the Maths of Voting. Led by undergraduates of Sussex University and Dr Darren Baskill the day was very thought provoking and our students were excellent representatives of the school, asking questions and taking part when volunteers were asked for.
Encouraging children to use the skills they have learnt in their maths lessons in everyday life will help embed their Numeracy skills.
Here we have a BEST BUY problem example.Very easy to replicate during the weekly supermarket trip. Not a problem if we use our phone calculator to solve!
Starting late September we will be delivering a twilight course for all stakeholders in Peacehaven Community School.• Improve your Maths skills to help your child at home
• Increase your own confidence in Mathematics
There is no cost but there is a commitment to work at home needed to pass the examination.
Ms Gallagher has had great success in the past running this course so please get in touch to register your interest.
