Year 11 Parents/Carers Info

Year 11 can be a very stressful time for students (and parents) and we would like to try and make the last year at secondary school go as smoothly as possible for all. There is a huge amount of support available to help students through the exam and post 16 application processes, enabling them, we hope, to have a highly successful and enjoyable final year with us at PCS.

Post 16 Choices Evening - Tuesday 4 October 6—8pm 2011

We have organised a special event for all Year 11 students and their parents, giving you the opportunity to come along and meet representatives from all the local colleges and training providers to ask questions, pick up a prospectus and see some of the options available to you when you leave school next year. We have also invited representatives from the Armed Forces and the NHS.

This will be a fantastic time to really consider the different options open to you and give you a chance to ask questions to help you make an informed choice.

Additional Information, Advice and Guidance

College Presentations

During the week commencing 10 October we have arranged for some of the local colleges to come into school at 3pm to talk to give a presentation and talk to interested students. This will be an opportunity to ask questions about course requirements of about college life in general. The presentations will take place in IT2 and IT3 as follows:

Monday 10 October 2011 —BHASVIC and City College
Tuesday 11 October 2011 —Varndean and Plumpton
Wednesday 12 October 2011—Sussex Downs

Prospectuses and Application Forms

College prospectuses and application forms will be available from the careers area at the back of the library from early October. There will be lots of help on completing applications forms available from PSHEE teachers and mentors over the next few weeks. Completed application forms must be returned to Mrs Hill by Tuesday 8 November 2011. All applications must come through us as we need to add a reference, please do not apply online.

Top Tips for parents to help your child succeed:

• Encourage healthy breakfasts
• Ensure your child stays hydrated
• Organisation is crucial!
• Use a notice board / fridge for key dates
• Encourage good sleep patterns (8 hours a night)
• Attend all PCS Year 11 events and College Open Evenings
• Refer to the homework timetable (found on PCS website). Students should be doing some homework every evening—this is good practise, not only for GCSE’s but for college too
