We were recently presented with the fantastic opportunity for our Year 9 students to join a programme of six GoSketch! Sessions.
These sessions were run here at the school. The innovative and exciting programme combined sport and design to encourage students take part in both. Over the 6 weeks, the group of students who had elected to take part learnt all about the game of cricket – and used techniques from the design industry as they worked in teams to build their own cricket-inspired characters and brought their own personalities to the sport.
The students were provided with a great professional coach from Wave Leisure (Daisy Bennett) who made sure that all participants enjoyed the sport part of the programme and we also go really creative back in the classroom. We were given workbooks and all the material needed to create our own mascots, logos, team names and crests. We also spent some time discussing and researching job roles associated with cricket and sports such as marketing, management and public relations.
The project was fully funded by the National Collaborative Outreach Programme and those completing the course received a free t-shirt and cricket bat in their team design.
We thoroughly enjoyed all of our sessions, which culminated in all participants being presented with their designed kits and bats at the Newhaven Cricket Club, followed by a game of cricket and afternoon tea with all participants and invited friends and families taking part.
We have taken a lot from the sessions, making new friends and learning new skills.
We would like to thank Tom from GoSketch! and Daisy from Wave Leisure for making the programme happen – we thoroughly enjoyed your company and expertise and hope to work with you both in the future!
