We are delighted to announce that year 10 students will undertake a 5 day work experience placement from Monday 9th July- Friday 13th July 2018.
The aim of work experience is to provide young people with an opportunity to:
Obtain a wider awareness of the world of work as part of their general education
Learn outside the classroom
Increase their economic understanding
Develop their employability skills
Relate their studies to the world of work and training
We would encourage your son/ daughter to find their own work experience placement and to discuss this with me once he/she has chosen their proposed placement. Please be aware that there may be a charge (up to £80) for health and safety checks to be carried out by the East Sussex County Council Work Experience Team for the chosen place if it is outside the local area/ county.Your son/ daughter will be recording his/her placement using a website database called Aspire.
If your son/ daughter is struggling to find his/her own placement he/she will be able to use Aspire to apply for a placement already on the system. Training in the use of aspire will be given in PSHE lessons. Your son/ daughter will be given an individual password and will be expected to access the Aspire system in his/her own time. The website address is:
We would strongly advise students choose their own placement and also have three back up options from the Aspire database. They will need to be prepared to go on any one of these three choices for their work experience week if their own placement falls through. The final deadline for students to have submitted all of their choices on the system is Wednesday, 18th October 2017, we cannot accept own placement requests after this date. Once the placement has been confirmed by the employer we will be writing to you with further information.
We would advise that students try to ensure that their placement choices are SMART:
S- Is going to develop employability skills.
M- Makes him/her feel excited at the prospect of going into this workplace.
A- Is in an area that is not too far away.
R- Have realistically considered what he/she will be able to do in this placement
T- That transport is easy to access in order to get to and from work
In June, students will participate in work experience lessons which help to prepare them for their placement.Topics covered in these lessons will include: health and safety in the workplace, child protection, employer expectations, and employability skills.
We hope that your son/ daughter will enjoy the experience and make the most of his/her work experience week.
