Students receive specialist human rights training
On Tuesday 25th May students Rafe Hall, Vicky Saunders, Kieran George, Rhys Lamberth, Billie Christer, Chelsea Davis, Barbara Salamao & Ceirney Edwards travelled to Amnesty International’s Human Rights Action Centre in London to attend a specialist youth group campaigns training day. The day was a huge success; students voiced their amazing ideas and expressed a strong passion for human rights and the associated responsibilities!
The students met with Dan Jones, MBE, human rights education advisor, Oliver Sprague programme director for the Arms Trade Treaty, Rajan Naidu; human rights campaigner and artist, and human rights film maker; Danelle Wessels, with whom they discussed many human rights issues and were praised for their intellect and questioning.
After discussing global issues with key human rights specialists, all students thought up fresh ideas towards creating a world free from arms abuse and a for democratic Burma. They created contemporary artwork with catchy slogans and screen printed their final piece.
Creative slogans ‘Don’t watch us, help us’ was voted in as a possibility in a series of Amnesty International youth and student posters and ‘Elect and protect’ was another winner. Year 11 student Ceirney Edwards stated that the best part of the day was that he spent the day working as a part of a team. All involved worked really hard, had a lot of fun and further developed their skills in creative campaigning.
They are now ready to change the world – watch this space!!
