Science Live! Trip - London

Last week, 26 year 10 Scientists were inspired by five of Britain's top scientists. We travelled to Westminster to be part of a series of Science presentations to an enormous audience of 2000 students.

From the world of the biological sciences we saw the world famous Professor Lord Robert Winston who gave fascinating talk on genetics and Dr Steve Jones who spoke with great knowledge about theories of evolution. We discovered how human skin has changed colour over the years and we became scared after we found out that if all we ate was raw food, we would be dead within 3 months. This is because the genes which code for digesting raw food have disappeared from human DNA.

We were dazzled by Dr Andrea Sella and his interesting mix of chemicals along with Dr Robert Mulvaney, the glaciologist who even brought ice that was millions of years old for us to see. The highlight of the day was Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock who closed the presentations by talking about her work in the traditionally male-dominated world of Space Science. She spoke with great eloquence about her journey from school to becoming a top scientist. It was clear why she recently received an MBE for her services to Science Education. She talked about how she overcame her dyslexia at school and set herself a goal that few people thought she could achieve. She presented with great enthusiasm whilst holding her 3 month old baby in her arms. She is a remarkable lady.

Other highlights include Cameron Wall who asked a very good question to Professor Lord Robert Winston and PCS being represented wonderfully by Alice Flattery, Rebecca Falmer, Jasmne Ball and Georgina Bingham for handing out the programmes to the 2000 students (and making themselves £5 each!). As always, PCS students were impecabbly behaved. Hopefully this will have inspired some of our students to pursue a rewarding career in the Sciences.
