Football 4 Peace Festival
Students Chloe Jackson, Ellie O'Brien, Nathan James, Harry Mills, Kyle Woolven, Mouhammed Bacha, Jamie Lamberth, Callum Carruthers, Oliver Groves, Paul Woods and Kieron Foster proudly represented PCS at this event on Saturday 2nd April. It's a global event involving student volunteers from the UK and German Universities, Jewish and Arab coaches from Israel, Palestine, Jordan and Ireland. The aim of the day was to provide young people from East Sussex with the experience of being coached and trained by Israeli, German and UK coaches using the football 4 peace methodology and then to participate in a non-elimination festival of football where the emphasis is on playing in mixed teams, building friendships, making their own substitutions, refereeing the games themselves, and competing for the fair play award
.
Our students conducted themselves impeccably, showing maturity, responsibility and pride in themselves and each other. They made friends with students from other schools and fully bought into the philosophy that sport can be used as a vehicle for moral and social development. Please congratulate these students for being such fantastic ambassadors to PCS and for having the courage to not only agree to be part of such a daunting situation, but for embracing the values that this unique project stands for and grabbing the opportunity with both hands!

PCS V Downlands at Boccia
On Tues 22nd March our senior friends from Downlands Court joined us for a spot of lunch and a competitive game of Boccia. This game is similar to indoor bowles but is designed for wheelchair users as you sit down when playing. Boccia is a traditional recreational sport, similar to bocce. The name Boccia is derived from the Latin word for ball – bottia. The sport is competed at national and international level, by athletes who require a wheelchair because of physical disability. In 1984 it became a Paralympic sport, and in 2008 was being practiced in over fifty countries worldwide.
The goal is to throw or bowl a ball so that it lands as close as possible to the target ball, known as the 'jack'. At the close of each 'end', the athlete whose ball is closest to the jack scores a point for each of their balls that finishes closer to the jack than their opponent's best ball.
Our GCSE PE students all play Boccia and so we arranged the game. It was a close affair and the final scores were PCS 19 Downlands 22! Quote from Vanessa Tait and Charlotte Stuart in Year 11 said “We loved playing against them and would like to make it a regular fixture!”

Rugby Tournament
Yr 7 boys rugby team travelled to Eastbourne on Monday 21st March to play in their first ever rugby tournament. They settled in quickly and as they got to grips with the fast pace of the game they started to produce some good attacking plays. The team managed to get some try's past most teams, but on the day were out played by some very strong opponents. The whole team contributed and played well but the stand out performances of Dean Hollingworth and Cian Furlong must be aknowledged - Cian showed fantastic leadership as captain and obvious talent for the game, and Dean displayed some of the best tackling seen at the tournament. Well done Boys!

Yr 8 attended a South Downs Sports Partnership rugby tournament at Eastbourne Rugby Club on Monday. Team players were: Dan Grimle, Pete Sowerby, Guy Bolton, Jack Norman, Paul Woods, Jason Greenwood, Sajid Rahman, Oli Grove, Chay Tregidgo, Keelan Massen.
Yr 9 attended the same event but the day afterwards and came 1ST out of 8 teams - not losing a game and even more impressively, not conceding a single try! They played some fantastic rugby and showed the other teams that PCS have a mixture of real talent and gritty determination. The forwards showed great discipline and drive in the tackles and rucks which was backed up by some of the best running and ball handling from the back row that was seen throughout the whole tournament. Rob Fogerty and Dan Giles-Hollis demonstrated great leadership as any captain and vice captain should, they led by example with some intelligent and mature rugby.

Yr 8 Rugby
The year 8 boys Rugby team played an away fixture at Tideway on 15th Feb, and were victorious despite playing in extremely demanding weather conditions, with a depleted squad of 11 players as opposed to the usual 15!
Tideway put out a strong team of 15 and had some very good passages of play, but our combination of very strong rucking and tackling from the forwards, combined with some gritty, energetic and inspired play from the back row was too much for them.
The game was won by two converted try's that were extremely well taken. The whole team put their hand up and played with great spirit and discipline, especially for a team consisting of players who had never played in a competitive game of rugby before. The stand out performances from Pete Sowerby at scrum half, Dan Rowland at Fly half and Gabriel Filipe at loose head prop must be recognised and celebrated. Well done boys!

Cheque it out
The PE facullty at PCS took part in the Lloyds TSB National School Sports week between 28th June and 2nd July 2010. We decided to take part in a "Dribble to South Africa Project".
We only had key Stage 3 students take part as our Year 10 students were on work experience and Year 11 were on study leave. We had a total of 506 students from 22 classes taking part. Miss Barry added up all the results and in total we managed 1498.87 Kilometres!! The total from Eastbourne to Johannesburg is 8992.7 kilometres. Sadly due to England’s existing from the World Cup against Germany we did rename the challenge to Dribbling HOME from South Africa!
We entered the challenge and had to log onto the Lloyds TEB website and over 100 people pledged for PCS which was then entered into a prize draw where we won you the prize of £1000 free sports equipment!!
Friday 10th December Sue Gladden from the Lloyds TBS Newhaven Branch presented us with the cheque.
Miss Barry quoted "Thank you to all the parents and people from the local community who get behind our school during the Lloyds TSB National School Sports Week. It's fantastic to win £1,000 worth of sports equipment vouchers which we will put to good use to help our students take part in even more sport. We will definataley be taking part again next year".
Albion Visit
Three Brighton & Hove Albion coaches led by Teresa Sanders spent a whole day teaching sixty Year 10 students about how best to include those with disabilities in sports as part of the Albion in the Community scheme.
The students were divided into 3 groups and throughout the day they rotated through 3 different activities:
Activity 1 - Blind football
Activity 2 - Deaf football
Activity 3 - Wheelchair football
The students learned how to coach these activities and achieved certificates.
In blind football blindfolds were used to deprive the students of sight so they could appreciate and experience how a blind person could play football. They also performed a variety of team building exercises which relied on sound and in putting trust in one another. One of these exercises was to run with the blindfold on towards another student who would direct them by clapping. Blind football makes use of a ball with bells in that jingles so the players can hear where the ball is.
Training for the deaf football relied on students learning some sign language and doing a number of different exercises using signalling to communicate with each other. Wheelchair football was probably the most popular activity of the day, with the students becoming adept at manoeuvring in the wheelchairs in a very short time and partaking in a few exciting matches. The day concluded with the students using the training and knowledge they had gained throughout the day to combine activities. This was all in preparation for the students to go on to organise a Disability Football Festival to be held here at PCS as part of their GCSE PE coursework.
Leadership Award

Teacher Collette Barry received a sports leadership award at the South Downs School Sports Partnership conference.
PCS was seen as the best school (from 12 secondary schools in Newhaven, Seaford, Lewes, Hailsham and Eastbourne area) in terms of leadership (64%) of our students take part in this.
Sussex Cricket Visit PCS
On Tuesday 2nd November and Thursday 4th November Sussex Cricket came into PCS and did some fun cricket stations with our some of our Year 7 classes. This was funded by Southern Water and it is a competition between 10 others schools in the South East. There were 4 stations, focusing on different skills such as catching, throwing, running and batting. Each student scored points on the stations.
5 students were selected over the two days and will go to Sussex Cricket ground in Hove on Sunday 5th December to compete against the other 9 schools in the activity areas. Our lucky 5 students were Simona King, Bradley Simmons, Jasmine Bowles, Joseph Radley Martin and Jonah Bos.
Year 7 Football Success
PCS started the match strongly, passing the ball well right from the first whistle. They opened the scoring after only 3 minutes when Joe Radley-Martin fired into the bottom corner. PCS continued to control the game and when Portslade did attack they couldn't find a way through the strong defensive line of Dean Hollingworth, Harry Mills, Ewan Lindsay and Declan Torgeson, who were doing a great job of protecting Daniel Goodlad in the PCS goal.

Alieu Secka almost doubled the lead before the break but his great left foot shot flew just wide of the post. The second half started well for PCS when Harry Docherty fired past the keeper from the edge of the box after good work from Brad Symonds. Harry then increased the lead further when he neatly lobbed the ball past the keeper from the edge of the area. Portslade then snatched a goal against the run of play but their joy was short lived when Harry completed his hat-trick to restore a 3 goal lead.
PCS weren't done though and continued to create chances through some good build up play from Sam Vallier and Nathan
James. Eventually PCS did increase their lead when Captain Kyle Woolven accurately smashed the ball home from outside the area after intercepting a Portslade goal kick. With time running out Kyle stylishly netted his second and PCS 6th goal with a cheeky chip over the goalie. Final score 6-1 to PCS. The teams first win of the season in the Brighton league.
Team: A. Secka, E. Lindsay, D. Torgeson, D. Hollingworth, H. Mills (Vice Captain), K. Woolven (Captain), J. Radley-Martin, B. Symonds, H. Docherty, S. Vallier, D. Goodlad, N. James

YEAR 10 Cricket MATCH REPORT
On Monday the year 10 cricket team travelled to Bishop Luffa for the County Cup Semi Final. In a very exciting match PCS made 108 with some fine batting from Tom Date, Mitch Wood and Connor Sidwell. Bishop Luffa made a great start at 43-0 before Tom Date took an excellent wicket bowling their no.1 bat out for 32. PCS looked like giving themselves a real chance when Mitch Wood ran out their no 7 to make it 95 for 6 with 4 overs to go but it was not to be and Bishop Luffa held on to make 110 for 6 and book their place in the final. Man of the Match - Tom Date.
Well played lads!!
YEAR 9 Cricket MATCH REPORT
On Thursday, the Year 9 Boys cricket team played Tideway in a close fought contest. PCS won the toss and chose to bat. Cameron Wiltshire was in magnificent form hitting 30 before retiring and Ollie Menzies came in to score an impressive 15 to steady the ship a time when PCS had lost 3 quick wickets. PCS finished on 101 for 7.Tideway started their innings brightly and it looked like the partnership of Robinson and Curl could prove to be match winning. It was stopped by an unbelievable catch from George Hatton off Robinson and the game was turned. When Wiltshire took the wicket of Usmin the game was over and although Tideway fought on their final total reached 91 all out.
Man of the Match - C.Wiltshire. Well played lads!!

Olympic Games Trip

On Tues 19th October a group of Year 8 Students went to St.Crispins School in Berkshire along with 12 other schools in the South East area and learnt about the seven Olympic and Para Olympic Values which are: Friendships, Respect, Excellence, Determination, Inspiration, Courage and Equality.
They were involved in workshops, action planning, brainstorming and listen to Anna Hemmings inspirational talk. These Year 8 students will be on the School Olympic Committee and will be ambassadors for our school in 2012 when they will be in Yr 10.
Miss Barry ran the trip and quoted “The students really enjoyed it and can’t wait to implement what they have learnt into our School”
