Thursday March 3rd was World Book Day which was designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and is marked in over 100 countries around the globe. The origins of the day we now celebrate come from Catalonia, where roses and books were given as gifts to loved ones on St. George’s Day – a tradition started over 90 years ago. World Book Day is a partnership of publishers, booksellers and interested parties who work together to promote books and reading for the personal enrichment and enjoyment of all.

Thanks to the generosity of National Book Tokens Ltd All students will be given a World Book Day token. These tokens are worth £1.00 and can be used at any participating bookshop until 27 March. They can be put towards a book with a cover price of at least £2.99 or be used to purchase the special £1 World Book Day books which will be available in selected bookshops.

Who’s Behind the Book? Competition

As part of our World Book Day celebrations, we are holding a competition to win one of two fabulous sets of books: a box-set of Alex Rider novels worth £50 and a box-set of Diary of a Wimpy Kid novels worth £30. There is also a choice of runner-up prizes featuring a Louise Rennison diary (author of Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging) and a Clarice Bean journal.

To be in with a chance of winning, simply look at the photographs of teachers hiding behind books on the notice board outside the library and identify them! The students who correctly identify the most teachers will win their choice of these wonderful prizes.

Hand your entries in at the library desk. Closing date: 17th March 2011
