Knepp Rewilding Visit

On Friday 17th October, 15 PCS Climate Ambassadors, student representatives from years 8, 9 & 10 had the amazing privilege of being invited to visit the Knepp Estate, A Biodiverse Wilderness Area in the Low Weald of Sussex.
What an experience! This has really helped us with our biodiversity awareness work which we will continue to share with the rest of the school.

Upon arrival we were met by Ryan, Erica and Ned and offered welly boots and binoculars before being toured around the 3,500 acre rewilding project.

Once a farm, but no longer conducive to modern intensive farming, Knepp is now a leading light in the conservation movement.
Students spent an amazing, informative day finding out how the storks, beavers, ponies, deer, horses, birds of prey to name but a few, have been reintroduced as an astonishing wildlife success in a relatively short space of time. We were even lucky enough to see some butterflies.

The site is visited by numerous conservation organisations, including the RSPB, Wildlife Trusts and the National Trust, as well as policy makers, farmers and landowners, Knepp is shaping the future of nature conservation and PCS students have been lucky enough to have been part of the experience.
‘’I never thought I’d be able to get that close to wild pigs, it was really funny to see them snuffling the acorns.’’
‘’The deer were amazing, the noises they made were incredible, so loud! And we were able to get really close to them as long as we stayed quiet.’’

‘’The best bit for me was the storks. With the binoculars you could see right into their nests, which weigh up to one tonne. They are massive, and the storks come back to the same nest every year.’’
‘’The Beavers enclosure was fantastic, listening to how they make their dams is fascinating and it was really interesting to see all of the gnawed teeth marks on the trees as they had fallen!’’

PCS would like to say thank you to the Knepp Estate for inviting us and providing us with such a brilliant guided safari tour.
