West End Trip

On Wednesday 14th October, a group of us enjoyed a two day theatre trip in London’s West End.

The excitement was palpable as we arrived in London and headed to the British Museum, looking round several rooms about the history of Africa and ancient Egypt.

We then headed to our hotel (where some of us enjoyed a much needed nap) before preparing ourselves for the much anticipated evening ahead.

We enjoyed a delicious meal at Mcdonald’s before heading to the Gielgud Theatre to catch the evening performance of  Lional Bart’s iconic classic, Oliver!

This spectacular production brought to life by Cameron Mackintosh, vividly recreated Charles Dickens’ London. We were all captivated by the show’s incredible energy, stunning set designs and unforgettable musical numbers such as food glorious food and you’ve got to pick a pocket or two.

We were lucky enough to see the brilliant Matt Lucas as Fagin, as well as some impeccable ensemble members. One actor that particularly stood out to us all, and even waved to us at the end of the show was Aaron Macgregor (who portrayed the character of the famous pickpocket The Artful Dodger).

After a restful night, we spent the following morning exploring the wonders of Covent Garden and admiring some incredibly talented street performers. We then had a wonderful time at the legendary Pineapple Dance Studios where we had an Oliver! inspired dance workshop. We learnt the iconic routine to consider yourself which we all very much enjoyed, it having been one of our favourite routines the night before.

Still on a high from the previous night, we were all excited to see a very different production of Stephen Sondeim’s Into the Woods at the Noël Coward theatre. Once again, the set was incredible and made us all feel as if we had stepped into a fairytale forest. This production brilliantly interwove the stories of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel in a chaotic, fast-paced yet deeply moving narrative about a baker and his wife desperate for a child.

Thank you to all the staff that made this dream trip possible. And a special thanks to our two London tour guides, Sasha and Henry.
