Poetry By Heart

The following students have just received certificates for their involvement in this year's Poetry by Heart competition:

Maisie W - Commended for her performance of 'Russian Doll' by Rachel Rooney

Erin C - Commended for her performance of 'Dusting the Phone' by Jackie Kay

Emily C - Highly Commended for her performance of 'London' by William Blake

Aahan D and Kyle C - Highly Commended for their performance of 'Spellbound' by Emily Bronté

Our students came back each Monday during Creative Writing Club and dedicated an hour after school to learning their chosen poems from:
www.poetrybyheart.org.uk

Students developed strategies for learning poems including using images, repetition, blanking out words and phrases and even playing charades. They spent the best part of a year learning and rehearsing before our final performance showcase where all of them shone in front of a small audience. Judges commended the 'feeling and emotion' of the recitations and praised students' 'word-perfect' performances.

The competition culminates with a final at the Globe Theatre in London and although none of our entrants were selected for this, we look forward to trying again next year. Any staff or students who would like to be involved should look out for announcements on New In Brief from September or speak to Mr Myson and Ms Poulton.
